Five Generations of Cascella Artists in Madrid Exhibition

A Madrid exhibition curated by Guicciardo Sassoli de’ Bianchi Strozzi brings together five generations of the Cascella family, an Italian dynasty of painters and sculptors originating from Abruzzo 150 years ago. The show spans works from founder Basilio Cascella (1860-1950) to contemporary digital artists Matteo Basilé (1974) and Davide Sebastian (1981), who use AI, augmented reality, and performance. Key historical figures include Michele Cascella (1892-1988), known for sunflower fields and Portofino views; Pietro Cascella (1921-2008) and Andrea Cascella (1920-1990), sculptors who collaborated on public works like the Monument to the Martyrs of Auschwitz (1967); and Tommaso Cascella (1951), whose abstract paintings dialogue with his father Pietro's Bozzetto per l'Ara Pacis. The exhibition also features textile art by Susanna Cascella (1956), surrealist paintings by Jacopo Cascella (1973), and symbolic works by Marco Cascella (1949). The Cascella family's evolution is traced from Divisionism and Symbolism through Cézanne and Picasso influences, to modern ceramics, aluminum sculpture, and digital media. The exhibition aims to present a unified vision of the family's diverse artistic production across painting, sculpture, publishing, poetry, textile art, photography, video, and digital art.
