Five Design Objects to Start a Collection, from Towel Stool to USM Haller

Following Milan Design Week, a selection of five design pieces is proposed as starting points for a distinctive collection. The Towel Stool by Laura Dominici and Basil Schu, from the Lazy Swim project at Alcova, blurs function and imagery inspired by beach landscapes, transforming towel stacks into sculptural seating. Shiro Kuramata's Progetti Compiuti drawers (1970s, e.g., SIDE 1, SIDE 2, SOLARIS, PC_12) explore repetition and modularity in black-stained ash and lacquered drawers, offering a historical yet contemporary base. A vase by NM3, presented at CASA NM3, is designed for silent habitation, oscillating between presence and absence. LIT STUDIO's side table uses a Murano glass module with a stone top by Pietre di Rapolano, combining craftsmanship and seriality. At Fondazione Luigi Rovati, the USM Haller modular steel system (over 60 years old) is reimagined as a skeleton supporting a soft textile membrane, blending rigidity and vulnerability.
