Five Contemporary Artists Expand Photography Through Staging, Collage and Construction

Photography has evolved beyond Henri Cartier-Bresson's 'decisive moment' concept, with artists since the late 1970s creating staged scenes rather than capturing found ones. Cindy Sherman, Gregory Crewdson and Jeff Wall pioneered this approach known as tableau photography. Contemporary practitioners continue to challenge photography's documentary assumptions through construction, collage and digital manipulation. Popel Coumou (b.1979) builds three-dimensional spaces from handmade paper cut-outs, using geometric shapes and sky images to create illusions of depth. JeeYoung Lee (b.1983) constructs elaborate fictional universes in her studio over weeks or months, featuring oversized leaves, origami boats and surreal scenes with navigating figures. Jooeun Bae (b.1994) creates the Mono– series inspired by 30 family members, friends and colleagues, photographing objects associated with them then crafting handmade collages from the prints. Julie Cockburn (b.1966) embellishes found photographs with hand-embroidery, adding motifs like dancing dots, concentric circles and stitched starbursts to vintage portraits and landscapes. Alma Haser (b.1989) creates puzzle-piece portraits that disrupt human forms, questioning identity manipulation in the age of social media. The term 'collage' originated with Cubist artists Georges Braque (1882-1963) and Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). These artists demonstrate photography's ongoing evolution as a constructed rather than purely documentary medium.
