Five Asian Artists Present Self-Portraits at 2025 Armory Show Amid Economic Challenges

festival-fair · 2026-04-19

Under the leadership of director Kyla McMillan, the 2025 Armory Show commenced at the Javits Center in New York, drawing more than 50,000 attendees and featuring 230 exhibitors from 35 nations. A critic spotlighted five Asian artists whose creations challenge conventional art narratives. Uuriintuya Dagvasambuu from Mongolia exhibited contemporary Mongol Zurag painting at Sapar Contemporary. Xu Yang, based in London, showcased work at Gallery Rosenfeld, fusing Rococo style with queer self-representation. Yifan Jiang, a Canadian Chinese artist represented by Alisan Fine Arts, integrated scientific rationality with elements of magical thinking. Jane Yang-D'Haene presented ceramic pieces at Bienvenu Steinberg & C, inspired by Korean moon jars, while Kosuke Kawahara from Japan displayed light-sensitive paintings at RAINRAIN Gallery. Their works have gained recognition from institutions such as the Dallas Museum of Art and Asia Society Texas, with D'Haene's pieces chosen for the vice president's residence collection in 2023.
