First US Solo Exhibition of Katsumi Nakai Opens at Polina Berlin Gallery

Polina Berlin Gallery in New York is hosting the first solo exhibition in the United States of works by the late Japanese artist Katsumi Nakai (1927-2013). Titled Katsumi Nakai: Works 1965-1997, the show brings together pieces from a three-decade period during which Nakai was based in Milan, a defining chapter of his career. The exhibition also coincides with the 70th anniversary of Nakai's first solo show, held in 1956 at Omote Gallery in Osaka. Born in Hirakata, Osaka, in 1927, Nakai studied painting at the Institute of Fine Arts of Osaka from 1953. He was part of a generation of Japanese artists who came of age in the aftermath of World War II. In 1958, he co-founded the avant-garde group Tekkei-Kai with six other artists, known for its experimental approach. The current presentation at Polina Berlin Gallery highlights Nakai's contributions to postwar art, offering US audiences a rare opportunity to engage with his work.
