First US exhibition of Balinese master Oototol at Fort Gansevoort

exhibition · 2026-04-24

Fort Gansevoort presents Oototol, the first US exhibition dedicated to the late Balinese artist Oototol (c. 1930-2008), featuring large-scale figurative ink paintings never before seen outside Asia. Born Dewa Raram, the artist lived in Pengosekan Village, Bali, Indonesia, and experienced the Japanese occupation of WWII, the independence struggle from Dutch rule, and the 1965 genocide and 1998 mass killings. Despite having no formal education or literacy, he created powerful works reflecting this upheaval.
