First Roma Art Exhibition in Romania Opens at Simeza Gallery, Launching International Project
The inaugural Roma art exhibition in Romania took place from August 5th to 19th, 2003, at Bucharest's Simeza Gallery on Magheru Boulevard. Featuring sculptors Marian Petre and Mircea Lacatus, the show marked the initial phase of a broader initiative by the Artisrroma Cultural Association. This Romanian NGO, established by Roma artists and enthusiasts, aims to strengthen ethnic, linguistic, and cultural identity while promoting art education and organizing exhibitions for Roma and international artists. Petre remains in Romania, whereas Lacatus relocated to Austria in 1990 after completing his studies. Their sculptures incorporate traditional metalworking techniques passed down through generations, with Petre blending carved wood and metal to explore human themes, including pieces titled "The Trace of Pain." Lacatus creates iron and steel works inspired by medieval armor and weaponry, having recently exhibited at Ebenfurth Castle in Austria. Financial support comes from the HAR Foundation, which coordinates the "Tradition and Postmodernity" program launched in Romania in 2000. The project seeks to expand by engaging Roma artists from Eastern and Central Europe in annual exhibitions, potentially fostering cultural emancipation and enriching contemporary art with traditional craftsmanship. Interest has already been expressed by artists in Bulgaria, Serbia, and Russia.
