First Posthumous Botero Exhibition Opens in Milan

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Ten days after the death of Fernando Botero (Medellín, 1932 – Monte Carlo, 2023), the Museo della Permanente in Milan presents the first posthumous exhibition of his work, titled "Via Crucis. La Passione di Cristo." The show features sixty works (including oils and preparatory drawings) from the Museo de Antioquia in Colombia, donated by the artist in 2012. The series, created between 2010 and 2011, comprises 27 oil paintings and 33 works on paper, exploring Botero's intimate relationship with religion. Unlike his typically ironic and playful style, these works convey pain and tragedy through sad and melancholic expressions. The exhibition runs from November 23, 2023, to February 4, 2024, at the Museo della Permanente in Milan.
