First Orléans Architecture Biennale Explores Utopia and Social Responsibility
The first Biennale d’Architecture d’Orléans, overseen by curators Abdelkader Damani and Luca Galofaro, is taking place at the FRAC Centre-Val de Loire and Collegiale Saint-Pierre-le-Puellier until April 1, 2018. This event examines the influence of architecture on collective memory, drawing inspiration from Hans Hollein. The central exhibition showcases both historical and contemporary architects, featuring 1960s utopian concepts such as Jean-Louis Chanéac’s “individual cells” and Paolo Scheggi’s “intercamere.” The curatorial theme juxtaposes utopian ideals with real-world issues, highlighting Ugo La Pietra’s critique of urban policies and Nidhal Chamekh’s documentation of conflicts in migrant camps. Additionally, the Saint-Pierre-le-Puellier area presents Didier Fiúza Faustino’s “Tomorrow’s shelter” and Jozef Jankŏvic’s illustrations, while Demas Nwoko’s 1960s Nigerian projects aim to blend traditions and foster cultural appreciation. The biennale emphasizes the importance of architects collaborating with political leaders.
