First museum exhibition dedicated to Wonder Woman opens in Milan
Palazzo Morando in Milan hosts 'Wonder Woman. Il mito' from November 17, 2021 to March 20, 2022, the first museum project entirely devoted to a superhero. Curated by Alessia Marchi, the exhibition explores Wonder Woman's origins through original comic boards (from Golden Age to present), video installations, costumes and props from the films, and works by contemporary artists including four Italian female illustrators currently drawing the character. The show traces the heroine's creation in 1941 by American psychologist William Moulton Marston, with initial illustrations by Harry G. Peter, and her evolution through the 1970s TV series starring Lynda Carter and the 2017 and 2020 films starring Gal Gadot. Marchi emphasizes the scientific approach, contextualizing Wonder Woman within costume history, society, and historical data, inspired by Jill Lepore's 2014 book 'The Secret History of Wonder Woman'. The exhibition includes pieces from Marchi's personal collection, DC Comics, and Milan's Museo del Fumetto. The golden armor from the recent films is on display, linking to the venue's historic setting. Marchi notes Wonder Woman's enduring symbolism of justice, equality, and compassion, describing her as a moderating force in the Justice League.
