First Monograph on Isabelle Cornaro Published by JRP Ringier

publication · 2026-04-23

JRP Ringier has published the first monograph dedicated to French artist Isabelle Cornaro. The book opens with an essay by art historian Vivian Sky Rehberg, surveying Cornaro's recent practice. Central to her work are objects that acknowledge a debt to Marcel Duchamp, as seen in series such as 'Paysage avec poussin et témoins oculaires' and 'Moulages sur le vif'. Cornaro examines perspective, the artist's role, and the viewer's position, oscillating between a synthetic distant view and close attentive scrutiny. Glenn Adamson, head of research at the Victoria & Albert Museum, contributes an analysis of Cornaro's relationship with decorative arts, emphasizing the importance of varied fabrication techniques (casting, scanning) even when production is outsourced. He notes that Cornaro explores not medium specificity but medium mutability, referencing Rosalind Krauss's call for art to have an objective center for meaningful practice. In an interview, Alice Motard, director of Raven Row in London, discusses recent works such as 'Du cinématique, sobre et architectural' and 'Le Proche et le lointain', an assemblage of objects in vitrines. Despite their differences, both series require the viewer to perform a cinematic montage operation. Clément Dirié concludes the volume, stating that Cornaro is interested less in representation than in the process of representation, and the value of things versus the value they acquire through being represented.
