First major Madame Grès retrospective in German-speaking world opens at Berlin's Kunstgewerbemuseum
Berlin's Kunstgewerbemuseum (KGM) is presenting the first significant retrospective of French designer Madame Grès (1903–1993) in the German-speaking region. The exhibition showcases 25 Grès models from the museum's collection, one of the largest outside of Paris, her home base. Additionally, it includes student designs influenced by her work, developed in partnership with the School of Culture and Design at the University of Applied Sciences Berlin (HTW). Born Germaine Émilie Krebs, Grès launched her career in the early 1930s as Mademoiselle Alix and co-founded the fashion house "Alix Barton" with Julie Barton. A notable piece from this era is a radiant gown in the KGM's collection, emphasizing her impact as a 20th-century haute couture innovator.
