First Maghreb Retrospective of Hamid Zénati Opens in Tunis
From April 18 to July 20, 2025, the Kamel Lazaar Foundation will showcase the inaugural Maghreb retrospective of Algerian artist Hamid Zénati (1944–2022) at the B7L9 Art Centre in Bhar Lazreg, Tunis. Curated by Nadine Nour el Din, with assistance from Anna Schneider and scenography by Bechir Riahi, the exhibition, titled 'The Birds Are Chirping Above the Tree,' will display Zénati's hand-painted textiles, wall frescoes, ceramics, photographs, garments, and altered everyday items. It will also include pieces from the foundation’s collection and contributions from artists like A. Gorgi, A. Sahli, and Baya. Original fragrances, Nafs and Joy (2025), were crafted by perfumer Dana El Masri. Zénati, originally from Constantine, emigrated to Munich in the 1960s, where he honed his self-taught skills. The exhibition is a collaboration with the Hamid Zénati Estate and the Goethe-Institut.
