publication · 2026-04-27

Paolo Bacilieri has released 'Piero Manzoni – BACGLSP (Basta A Ciascun Giorno La Sua Pena)', the first graphic novel dedicated to the Italian artist Piero Manzoni, published by Coconino Press. The book, inspired by Flaminio Gualdoni's biography 'Vita d’Artista', traces Manzoni's life from his birth in 1933 to his death in 1963 at age 29. It covers his early years, his time at Bar Jamaica in Milan's Brera district, and his relationships with figures like Lucio Fontana, Ettore Sottsass, Mariangela Melato, Paolo Poli, Enrico Baj, and Asger Jorn. The second half focuses on his mature works, including 'Merda d’artista', which anticipated Arte Povera and conceptual art. Bacilieri's black-and-white drawings depict Milan's post-war reconstruction and economic boom. The idea originated in December 2014 when Coconino editor Giovanni Ferrara suggested the project to Bacilieri. The book includes Lombard dialect phrases and songs.
