First Ferrari Luce EV Sells for $40 Million at RM Sotheby's Monterey Auction

At the RM Sotheby's Monterey auction on Saturday, the inaugural production model of Ferrari's first electric vehicle, the Luce, fetched an astonishing $40 million, far surpassing its pre-auction estimate of $1.1 million. Known as Chassis 0, this car was crafted through Ferrari's Tailor Made program and showcases a unique Madreperla Semi-Gloss finish, complemented by an interior dressed in Le Mans metallic leather with Grigio Corvara accents. It features a plaque marking it as Ferrari's initial production EV and boasts a quad-motor setup delivering 1,035 hp. The successful bidder will take possession of the vehicle next year, with all proceeds benefiting the Ferrari Foundation due to the waiver of the buyer's premium. This sale positions the Luce among the priciest cars ever auctioned, alongside legendary Ferraris and Mercedes-Benz race cars. The design, envisioned by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, has sparked debate, with former Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo suggesting the removal of the iconic badge to preserve its legacy. Nonetheless, the auction highlights a robust interest in first-production Ferraris, especially in charitable contexts.
