First art auction in Italy with sign language interpretation held by Galleria Pananti
On February 17, 2023, Galleria Pananti Casa d'Aste in Florence held Italy's first art auction with Italian Sign Language (LIS) interpretation, organized in collaboration with interpreter Elisa Carlesi. The auction featured two sessions: one for Antique Art and 19th-20th century authors, and another for Modern and Contemporary Art. Notable works included a preparatory piece for a tapestry by Vittorio Zecchin (1920), a rare 'Natura Morta' by Cagnaccio da San Pietro (a rebel painter of the 'Realismo Magico' movement), and contemporary works by Marca-Relli, Schifano, Festa, Angeli, Tom Wesselmann (1997 study for 'La Veglia Funebre'), Boccioni, and Adami (1984 work dedicated to the yacht Azzurra with the Yachting Club Costa Smeralda logo). Director Filippo Pananti stated the initiative stemmed from friendship with Carlesi, who raised awareness about the deaf community. The gallery also launched the online series 'Casa Pananti' with subtitles for deaf viewers. Founded in 1968 by Piero Pananti, the gallery is known for exhibitions, auctions, and the 'Panantine' book series featuring Italian authors like Moravia and Parazzoli. The event aimed to make auctions accessible to the deaf community, with adjustments for video rendering and audience seating.
