First Annual Governor's Island Art Fair Showcases Artist-Organized Alternative to Commercial Fairs

Running until October 12, 2008, the first-ever Governor's Island Art Fair is curated by the artist group 4heads, which includes Antony Zito, Ernie Sandidge, Nicole Laemmle, and Preet Srivastava. Housed in Building 114, previously a nurses' residence, the event showcases forty-six artists, comprising thirty-one painters, eight installation artists, four photographers, and various sculptures, sound works, and scanographs. The fair prioritizes artistic creativity over commercial gain. Highlights feature Ann Walsh's vinyl constructions, Caroline Cox's "Ocean Biography," Obaidullah Mamoon's images of Bangladesh, Stefania Zamparelli's Afghan buzkashi scenes, Helen Quinn's "The Annunciation," and James Peterson's "August, the Devil's Playground." Visitors can reach the fair via a complimentary seven-minute ferry ride from Manhattan.
