First Alabaster Sculpture Symposium Brings Six International Artists to Volterra

festival-fair · 2026-04-26

The first edition of the Alabaster Sculpture Symposium is underway in Volterra, Italy, organized by the young cultural association Tagete. From October 2024, six international artists—Nicola Fucci, Valeria Greco, Abdulkadir Hocaoğlu, Federico Pruneti, Sofia Stella, and Chantal Stropeni—are working on-site at the Bastione di Volterra until October 17, creating alabaster works inspired by the local landscape and artistic tradition. The initiative aims to innovate the centuries-old alabaster craft while promoting environmental awareness and contemporary art. The symposium culminates on October 18 with the presentation of completed works at the Pinacoteca di Volterra, where they will remain on view until December 31, 2024. The event coincides with the feast of San Luca degli Alabastrai, patron saint of medieval stoneworking guilds, opening workshops and inns to the public. Tagete, founded in 2023, focuses on contemporary art and ecological sensitivity through regeneration projects in urban and natural areas. Previous projects include the First International Sculpture Symposium in Messina at the San Jachiddu Ecological Park, involving seven artists from Greece, Bulgaria, and England. The association plans further interventions across Italy and internationally to spread ecological awareness and new expressive forms.
