Fire Breaks Out at London's Historic Somerset House

On Saturday afternoon, August 17, 2024, a significant fire erupted at Somerset House in central London. More than a hundred firefighters were called to the scene to battle the flames, which generated noticeable black smoke. The incident started in the roof section of the west wing, where offices are located; however, director Jonathan Reekie confirmed that no artworks were harmed. The site was briefly closed to visitors. Somerset House boasts a storied past, including its role in negotiating the 1604 Treaty of London and serving as the headquarters for Parliamentarians during the English Civil War. It is also home to the Courtauld Gallery and Somerset House Studios. The full extent of the damage remains unclear.
