Fire at Sheffield's Full Monty Club Believed to Be Arson

A fire broke out at Shiregreen Working Men's Club in Sheffield, UK, on Sunday just before 16:45 BST, with authorities suspecting arson. The club, famously featured in the 1997 film The Full Monty, has been closed since 2019 and had been deliberately set on fire the previous year. Eight fire engines and a turntable ladder responded, and no injuries were reported. Crews remained until after midnight and planned to return to check for hotspots. The building, which has become derelict, was saved from demolition in 2020 after a petition with over 1,000 signatures. Ann Bentley, who worked at the club for 15 years and led the petition, expressed devastation at the news. The Full Monty, an Oscar-winning comedy starring Robert Carlyle and Mark Addy, depicted Sheffield steelworkers who turned to stripping, and its famous final scene was filmed inside the club. The fire service confirmed the latest blaze is also believed to be deliberate.
