Fire at Seattle's Davidson Galleries threatens works by Picasso, Rembrandt, Goya
A fire broke out behind Davidson Galleries in Seattle's Pioneer Square district in the early hours of January 12, likely caused by someone igniting a fire for warmth in the alley. The three-story gallery, which specializes in works on paper including woodcuts, etchings, and lithographs, held between 16,000 and 18,000 pieces valued at over $1 million. Over 100 artworks were damaged by fire and smoke, with many pieces on the floor as the gallery prepared to move to a new location at 85 Yesler Way. Firefighters were judicious with water to minimize damage, and the community helped move salvaged pieces to safety. Director Rebecca McDonald expressed heartbreak over irreplaceable works, though the gallery has insurance and most pieces were saved. A fundraiser has been launched.
