Fire at Patna Museum, no casualties reported

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-24

A blaze erupted in the under-construction new wing of the Patna Museum, located in Bihar, India. Established in 1917 during British colonial rule, the museum has been shut since June of the previous year for redevelopment. Multiple fire trucks responded to the incident, but fortunately, there were no reported injuries or fatalities. While the museum has yet to disclose any damage to its collection, PTI News Agency indicated that most artefacts and artworks were housed in one of the newly finished galleries during the renovation of the older structure. The museum's collection features archaeological items, coins, textiles, sculptures, ceramics, a First World War cannon, a fossilized tree dating back 200 million years, and unique paintings illustrating life under British governance.
