Finnish Grump Searches for Rare Ford Escort in Germany

The film 'Grump – Auf der Suche nach dem Escort' follows a cantankerous Finnish man (Heikki Kinnunen) who crashes his red 1972 Ford Escort and must find an identical replacement, which is unavailable in Finland. Directed by Mika Kaurismäki, the character Grump, created by author Tuomas Kyrö, embarks on a comedic odyssey through Germany, visiting Hamburg's Reeperbahn, a hospital, and a trailer commune where his long-lost brother Tarmo (Kari Väänänen) lives. The story is one of redemption, as Grump learns the importance of family and reunites his estranged relatives. Mika Kaurismäki, known for a more conventional style than his brother Aki, infuses the film with the family's trademark laconic humor, making it a warm-hearted comedy. The film airs on Arte on April 24 and is available in the Arte-Mediathek until May 23.
