Finland, UK, Australia, New Zealand Announce Artists for 2017 Venice Biennale
With one year to go until the 57th Venice Biennale, several national pavilions have announced their artists. Finland selected Erkka Nissinen and Nathaniel Mellors, whose irreverent multimedia installation featuring 'talking eggs' will transform the architectural space into an immersive environment, curated by Xander Karskens. The selection followed an open call. The United States will be represented by Mark Bradford. Canada chose Vancouver-based minimalist artist Geoffrey Farmer (b. 1967), with a show curated by Kitty Scott and Josée Drouin-Brisebois, Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the National Gallery. Australia selected Tracey Moffatt, while New Zealand opted for panoramic video artist Lisa Reihana. The United Kingdom named Phyllida Barlow (b. 1944), a descendant of Charles Darwin known for large-scale sculptures and installations, under the auspices of the British Council. Italy has yet to announce its curator or artist, prompting criticism for its last-minute approach and failure to award a solo show.
