Finkelstein Gallery Opens in Melbourne, Representing Only Women Artists
Finkelstein Gallery, the first Australian gallery to exclusively represent women artists, opened on August 29, 2019, in Melbourne. Founder Lisa Fehily, a lawyer and consultant, launched the gallery to address gender disparity in the art market, where only 40% of artists in private Australian galleries and 34% in state museums are women. The opening exhibition, titled "Launch exhibition," features Australian artists Cigdem Aydemir, Coady, Deborah Kelly, and Lisa Roet, alongside international artists Sonal Kantaria (London) and Kim Lieberman (South Africa). The exhibition runs until September 28, 2019. Fehily cited inspiration from the National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington and its #Fivewomenartists campaign.
