Finja Sander's 'Will groß sein, will siegen' at Kunstverein Wilhelmshöhe

exhibition · 2026-05-22

Kunstverein Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel presents 'Will groß sein, will siegen' by Finja Sander, curated by Alex Besta, through May 31, 2026. The exhibition explores ambition, grief, and memory through installation and photography. The title work spreads fifteen ceiling supports horizontally across the main hall, connected by orange ratchet straps, reconfiguring support as a lateral network rather than vertical bracing. Two arch-shaped styrofoam panels echo the building's arched windows. In the Kabinett, 'Backyard Reunion [Kabinett]' uses painter's plastic sheeting to create a semi-transparent enclosure, with a small photograph at the far end. 'Backyard Reunion [FRAMES] I–II' features linen prints from Sander's series 'Twenty-Something Girls' (2025), with grave flowers placed on the floor beneath. Sander's practice treats memory as a behavior rather than an archive, emphasizing reuse and reassembly over preservation. The venue, a Gründerzeit building with tall arched windows, becomes an active participant in the installation.
