Fine Wine as an Investment Asset Class Gains Traction

Fine wine is increasingly viewed as a stable long-term investment, insulated from market volatility. Collector Alex Montague, a worldwide ambassador for Rare Champagne, began tasting at age 12 and recalls a bottle made by Louis Pasteur in the 1880s that later sold for $50,000 at auction. He invests in Burgundy, Champagne, Rhône, Jura, and Swiss Pinot Noirs, holding bottles for five to ten years. Henrik Hovmark Eriksen, a Danish business owner, recently made 20% on a quick sale of wedding bottles; his $1.4 million collection is split between Rarewine and Winecap, where he never takes possession. Winecap CEO Alexander Westgarth advises clients to use bonded storage like London City Bond Drakelow to preserve provenance and value. Minimum investment is £5,000; average portfolio is £65,000. A January survey of 200 wealth managers found 97% expect demand for fine wine to increase. Westgarth notes wine remains untethered from energy costs and corporate earnings, acting as a safe haven.
