Final span placed on Renzo Piano's Genoa bridge, completion by July 2020
The last section of the new Genoa bridge, crafted by Renzo Piano, was successfully placed between piles 11 and 12, marked by the sound of ship sirens. Among the attendees were Prime Minister Conte and Infrastructure Minister De Micheli. This bridge, which is set to replace the Morandi viaduct that collapsed, spans 1,067 meters and consists of 18 piers, with an expected completion date of July 2020. Construction proceeded even during the COVID-19 pandemic. The project is being overseen by PERGENOVA S.C.p.A. and will introduce Europe's first "smart bridge." The adjacent area will transform into Parco del Polcevera, designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti, featuring a 1,570-meter cycle-pedestrian path and a memorial for the 43 victims of the August 14, 2018 disaster. The bridge may be named in honor of Niccolò Paganini.
