Filippo Palizzi Bicentennial Exhibition 'After the Flood' Opens in Vasto
The city of Vasto is celebrating the bicentennial of painter Filippo Palizzi (1818–1899) with a major exhibition titled 'Dopo il Diluvio' (After the Flood), running from September at Palazzo d'Avalos. Over 150 works trace his career from 1830 to 1899, covering his Abruzzo origins, training in Naples, travels to Moldavia and Northern Europe, dialogue with Paris via his brother Giuseppe, stays in Cava de' Tirreni, and his work at the Museo Artistico Industriale di Napoli. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Polo Museale dell'Abruzzo and the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Roma. Curated by Lucia Arbace, the title references Palizzi's iconic painting 'Dopo il Diluvio,' depicting animals emerging from Noah's Ark as a symbol of rebirth after catastrophe. This theme resonates with the 2009 earthquake in Abruzzo, offering a message of hope for the region's renewal. The exhibition includes interactive touchscreens for children to identify over 60 animals in the painting, as well as workshops. A volume titled 'Filippo Palizzi: la Natura, le Arti,' edited by Lucia Arbace, accompanies the show.
