Filippo Berta's Performance at Thessaloniki Biennale Explores Religious Symbols and Bodily Limits

From October 13 to 21, 2017, the sixth Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art showcased the Performance Festival, organized by the State Museum of Contemporary Art (SMCA) with support from the 52nd Dimitria Festival. Centered around the theme 'Imagined Homes,' the festival featured artists such as Lanfranco Aceti and Filippo Berta. On October 15, Berta presented his performance 'A nostra immagine e somiglianza' at ÜBERΝΤΟΥΖ, where participants hammered nails to suspend crucifixes, symbolizing the boundaries between the divine and the earthly. This piece critiqued societal inclinations to elevate certain individuals, intertwining themes of spirituality and materiality. The installation was accessible until November 12, while the exhibition 'Siluetas de Alma' at SMCA paid tribute to Ana Mendieta. The Biennale concluded on January 14, 2018.
