Festival of Dangerous Ideas Launches Inaugural Film Program in Sydney

festival-fair · 2026-08-18

Sydney's Festival of Dangerous Ideas (FODI) is diving into the world of film for the first time with “Dangerous Films: Old Reels, New Revelations,” showcasing nine intriguing movies at Dendy Newtown from August 20 to 30. Curated by Danielle Harvey, the lineup includes classics like Leos Carax's "Holy Motors" (2012), Ishirō Honda's "Gojira" (1954), and Jane Campion's "The Piano," among others. Harvey emphasizes the aim is to reassess these films with contemporary insights, where real danger lies in their consequences, not just shock value. John Cameron Mitchell will host a masterclass called "Just Be Punk" on August 23 and present "Shortbus" on August 30, while also participating in the Melbourne International Film Festival on August 21. Under Harvey's guidance, the festival has grown from two days to ten, covering various art forms and discussions, all presented by The Ethics Centre.
