Ferzan Özpetek directs Tosca's music video inspired by Hopper's 'New York Movie'

other · 2026-04-27

Turkish director Ferzan Özpetek has created a music video for Italian singer Tosca, inspired by Edward Hopper's 1939 painting 'New York Movie', currently on view at MoMA's Alfred H. Barr, Jr. Galleries. The video, shot in an empty theater, mirrors the painting's solitary usherette and explores themes of solitude and love. Tosca performed the song 'Ho amato tutto' at the 2020 Sanremo Festival, where it won the Giancarlo Bigazzi Award for best musical composition. The video was filmed a month before the COVID-19 pandemic forced theater closures, lending it unintended resonance. Özpetek, known for films like 'Le fate ignoranti' and 'Saturno contro', collaborated with Tosca for the first time. The painting 'New York Movie' has been exhibited at the Hayward Gallery London, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Städtische Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and in Hopper retrospectives at the Whitney Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Detroit Institute of Arts, and St. Louis Art Museum.
