Ferrari Sheppard's Gold Leaf America Debuts at Rome's Villa Torlonia

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Casino dei Principi of Villa Torlonia in Rome hosts 'Ferrari Sheppard. Crucible', the Italian debut of Afro-American artist Ferrari Sheppard (b. 1983, Chicago). Curated by Ludovico Pratesi, the exhibition presents eighteen works, eleven of which are site-specific. Sheppard's large-scale canvases blend neo-impressionist vibrancy with acrylic, charcoal, and 24-karat gold leaf, evoking Byzantine art while recalling the informal style of the Roman School of the 1920s-30s and American graffiti. Each piece is infused with dreamlike quality, with brushstrokes seemingly moving to a jazz rhythm. Sheppard, also a writer, photographer, and record producer, channels a troubled adolescence in a working-class neighborhood where he was often threatened with firearms. In the video 'Be in My Mind', he states: 'It seems to me that the artist's struggle for integrity is a metaphor for the universal daily struggle of all human beings. And if you have that funny, terrible thing that every artist can recognize, that no artist can define, you are responsible for bringing light into darkness.'
