Fernando Melani: The Hermit Artist of Pistoia
Fernando Melani (1907–1985) was an Italian artist known for his reclusive life and rigorous, eccentric practice. Born in 1907, he moved to Pistoia at age seven and lived there his entire life, rarely leaving. His home became a laboratory and installation space filled with paintings, sculptures, assemblages, furniture, and writings. Melani conceived art as a total activity without boundaries, driven by energy and tension between artist and world. He wore a blue worker's uniform and yellow scarf for forty years, ate once daily at a trattoria, and had no kitchen to avoid contaminating his workspace. In 1953 he wrote the theoretical text 'Davanti alla pittura,' advocating for abstract art. Art historian Lara-Vinca Masini compared him to Joseph Beuys, citing their shared focus on matter's inherent force and energy as chaos. In the 1960s, Luciano Fabro was struck by Melani's rigor; they met on April 6, 1967, at Galleria Numero in Milan, where Carla Lonzi curated Melani's solo show. Their friendship lasted over a decade, including joint exhibitions and reciprocal visits. Melani participated in Documenta V in 1972 with six works but never traveled to Kassel. The artistic partnership ended in 1980 at a group show at Galleria Vera Biondi in Florence featuring Fabro, Melani, and Renato Ranaldi. The most important retrospective of Melani's work was held in 1990 at Palazzo Fabroni in Pistoia, curated by Bruno Corà.
