Fernando Botero's Reinterpretations of Iconic Artworks Through His Voluptuous Style

Born in Medellín in 1932, Fernando Botero is a renowned Colombian figurative artist known for his distinctive style, 'Boterismo,' which employs exaggerated forms to express critique and emotion. As Latin America's most celebrated contemporary artist, his sculptures can be found in prominent locations such as New York City's Park Avenue and Paris's Champs-Élysées. Among his significant works is the 2009 reinterpretation of Raphael's 'La Fornarina,' displayed at Rome's Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica. In 1982, he created 'La Menina,' inspired by Velázquez's 'Las Meninas,' and in 1997, he offered a new take on Jan van Eyck's 'The Arnolfini Portrait' at London's National Gallery. Additional notable pieces include 'Mademoiselle Caroline Rivière' (1979), a diptych from 1998, 'Honeysuckle Bower' (1965), and 'Mona Lisa' (1978) at Bogotá's Botero Museum.
