Fernand Léger's Multidisciplinary Universe at BOZAR Brussels
The exhibition 'Le Beau est partout' at BOZAR in Brussels showcases Fernand Léger's multidisciplinary practice through about 100 works and archival materials. Curated by Ariane Coulondre and previously presented at Centre Pompidou-Metz, the show is organized into six chapters: Speed and Machines, Poetry, Cinema, Circus and Dance, Architecture, and Political Commitment. It opens with the monumental painting 'Le Transport des forces' (1937), which required three days of installation by fifteen people. BOZAR has enriched the exhibition with graffiti by Farm Prod, a visitor guide with texts by five contemporary writers, a promo video based on Léger's works, and performers dancing in costumes designed by Léger. The exhibition runs until June 3, 2018. Sophie Lauwers, BOZAR's exhibitions director, explained that the institution receives one-third public funding, one-third private, and one-third from box office, totaling about 1.3 million visitors annually across concerts, films, and exhibitions. BOZAR produces 25 to 30 exhibitions per year, some free. Future shows include 'EUROPE, EUROPE' (June 20), 'Resist! The 1960’s protest' (June 27), 'Beyond Klimt' (September 21, co-produced with Belvedere Vienna), a Chris Marker exhibition (September 19), and a Theodoor van Loon retrospective (October 10) with Romeo Castellucci's intervention.
