Fernand Léger's Largest UK Exhibition Opens at Tate Liverpool

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Tate Liverpool presents the largest exhibition of Fernand Léger ever seen in Britain, marking 30 years since the museum's opening. Titled "Fernand Léger: New Times, New Pleasures," the show brings together over 50 works, many never before exhibited in the UK. The exhibition spans abstract and figurative paintings from across Europe, along with drawings, a large-scale mural, films, graphic works, books, and textiles. It explores how the French artist, inspired by Cubism and industrial civilization, redefined art's role in 20th-century society, developing a unique visual style influenced by street advertising, posters, and neon signs. A highlight is "Essential Happiness, New Pleasures 1937/2011," a work created in collaboration with architect and designer Charlotte Perriand, shown for the first time in Britain. Also on display is Léger's 1924 experimental film "Ballet Mécanique." The exhibition runs from November 23, 2018 to March 17, 2019 at Tate Liverpool, Albert Dock.
