Fermo's Renaissance: Contemporary Art Meets Ancient History

The city of Fermo, Italy, is leveraging its rich historical heritage to become a hub for contemporary art. The Pinacoteca Civica di Palazzo dei Priori hosts the exhibition 'Bell' by the duo Vedovamazzei until June 3, featuring a new hand-painted bronze sculpture inspired by an 18th-century bell from the museum's collection. After the show, the work will enter the permanent collection. Concurrently, 'I Pittori della realtà. Verità e illusione tra Seicento e Novecento,' curated by Vittorio Sgarbi, runs until May 1. The Terminal Mario Dondero, a former bus terminal redesigned by Studio Carmassi, now serves as a contemporary art and culture space, with a permanent section dedicated to Fermo-born artist Sandro Trotti. The FUM (Fermo Urban Museum) project has brought street art by eleven Italian artists since 2017, addressing environmentalism and gender relations. A mural by Panic honors photographer Mario Dondero. Fermo's historical sites include Roman cisterns, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, and the medieval hilltop village of Torre di Palme, which also features an archaeological museum opened in 2019. The city's museums, including the Museo Polare and Museo di Scienze Naturali at Palazzo Paccaroni, offer scientific collections.
