Fenix Museum in Rotterdam to Open May 2025, Focused on Art and Migration

institutional · 2026-04-24

Rotterdam is set to launch Fenix, a museum dedicated to art and migration, on May 16, 2025. This museum will occupy a 16,000 sqm warehouse that was once part of Holland America Line and historically significant for processing millions of migrants in the 19th and 20th centuries. The renovation will be managed by MAD Architects, led by Ma Yansong, as part of the city’s dock revitalization efforts. The opening exhibitions will feature 'All Directions: Art That Moves You,' with 150 artworks from the Fenix collection by artists like Francis Alÿs, and 'The Family of Migrants,' a photography exhibit with 194 images influenced by Edward Steichen’s 1955 work at MoMA. Director Anne Kremers highlighted the museum’s ties to both Rotterdam and global migration, with funding from the Droom en Daad Foundation, founded in 2016 by former Rijksmuseum director Wim Pijbes.
