Feng Chen's 50-Day Quarantine Diary from Wuhan

artist · 2026-04-27

Chinese digital artist Feng Chen, born in 1986, recounts his experience of over 50 days under lockdown in Wuhan, where he returned on January 17, 2020, from Hangzhou to celebrate the Chinese New Year with his family. The city was sealed off on January 23 due to the coronavirus outbreak. Chen, known for hypnotic video, sculpture, and installation works that explore synchronization between graphics and audio, has participated in Art Basel Hong Kong's Discoveries section with 'The Darker Side of Light – Color' and exhibited at the 6th Guangzhou Triennial and Shanghai Jing'an International Sculpture Project. During quarantine, he established a routine: reporting his body temperature via an app, reading news, playing ping-pong on the dining table converted into a makeshift table, doing HIIT workouts with his girlfriend remotely, and photographing sunsets. His mother cooked three meals daily plus snacks despite limited ingredients. Chen emphasizes maintaining rationality in consuming news, staying curious, and using isolation to try new things. The account was translated from Chinese by curator Manuela Lietti, with images courtesy of Capsule Shanghai.
