In May, Fender CEO Edward "Bud" Cole gave an interview to T3 celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Telecaster, where he made controversial comments about AI and music. The interview has recently resurfaced, adding to the company's ongoing PR crisis following cease-and-desist letters sent to builders over the Stratocaster body shape copyright. Cole compared learning cover songs to "analog AI," suggesting that AI in music is nothing new and that cover music has been a form of analog AI for a long time. He also compared bandmates to analog AI, stating that they help in songwriting just as AI can. Cole expressed belief that AI will help create a new world of guitar players, aiding them in connecting with other musicians and becoming masters of songwriting. Critics, including guitar YouTubers like Steve Onotera (Samurai Guitarist), have condemned these views, arguing that human creativity and physicality cannot be replicated by AI, and that relying on AI tools may lead to deskilling. The controversy has led some influential guitar YouTubers to boycott Fender gear. Fender did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
