Female Artists Dominate National Pavilions at 2019 Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Ahead of the 58th Venice Biennale (May 11–November 24, 2019), curated by Ralph Rugoff, most announced national pavilions feature female artists. Ireland selected Eva Rothschild (b. 1972, Dublin), curated by Mary Cremin of Void Gallery, Derry. Austria chose feminist artist Renate Bertlmann (b. 1943, Vienna), curated by Felicitas Thun-Hohenstein. Great Britain picked Cathy Wilkes (b. 1966, Belfast), curated by Zoe Whitley of Tate Modern; this marks the third consecutive British pavilion led by a woman after Sarah Lucas (2015) and Phyllida Barlow (2017). France selected Laure Prouvost (b. 1978, Lille), chosen by ministers Jean-Yves Le Drian and Françoise Nyssen. Finland's pavilion is the exception, featuring the Miracle Workers Collective. The trend highlights a notable female presence across national representations.
