Fellini's Unfinished Screenplay 'Napoli-New York' to Become Graphic Novel and Film

publication · 2026-04-27

Arancia Studio, an Italian creative atelier specializing in visual communication, intellectual property development, and comics production, has announced a graphic novel based on an unfinished screenplay by Federico Fellini. The project coincides with the 30th anniversary of the legendary Rimini-born filmmaker's death on October 31, 1993. Titled 'Napoli-New York,' the comic is written by French author Jean-David Morvan, with Italian artist Ste Tirasso. It draws from a manuscript Fellini co-wrote with screenwriter Tullio Pinelli in the 1940s. Set in Naples in 1946, the neorealist story is inspired by real events during World War II. It follows Celestina, a girl whose home is destroyed by bombing, who embarks on a journey with a street urchin named Carmine to New York to find her sister Agnese and her American husband. Their fate changes when they encounter Joseph Garofalo, a hot-tempered naval officer who discovers the two stowaways. The graphic novel is scheduled for release in 2024. Additionally, Rome-based production company Paco Cinematografica, known for producing the Oscar-winning film 'The Best Offer' by Giuseppe Tornatore and the upcoming series 'Dostoevskij' co-produced with Sky Studios by Damiano and Fabio D'Innocenzo, is working on a film adaptation of Fellini and Pinelli's story. The film will be directed by Gabriele Salvatores and will feature Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino.
