Felix Colgrave's Surreal Short Film 'Dry Run' Premieres on Adult Swim

digital · 2026-05-04

Australian animator Felix Colgrave returns with a new surreal short film titled 'Dry Run', a year after his acclaimed 'Double King'. Created for the anthology TV program 'Off the Air' on Adult Swim, the animation opens with the mysterious beaching of a Trolval, a fantastic sea creature often found in late Renaissance map engravings. Amid curious smartphone-wielding bystanders and bumbling improvised rescuers, the monstrous yet fascinating animal begins to move, ignoring help and seemingly annoyed. An exhausting pilgrimage ensues, with a police escort and blazing sun, leading to an unexpected destination: a mini market. Once inside, greeted by an indifferent cashier, the sea monster grabs snacks, chips, and cigarette packs featuring anti-smoking warning images. After collecting its loot and spilling a treasure chest's contents on the floor, the Trolval returns to the abyss, leaving its purchases floating on the water as bewildered villagers watch. The short ends with a cormorant choking on a Pringles tube. Colgrave's subtle black humor, expressed through extreme characterizations, invites interpretation—whether a reflection on the ephemeral, a critique of ocean pollution, or something else entirely.
