Feinkost Gallery's 'Communism Never Happened' Exhibition Critiques Historical Memory
Between November 7 and December 20, 2009, 'Communism Never Happened' was exhibited at Galerie Feinkost in Berlin, curated by Aaron Moulton and Mette Ravnkilde Nielsen, marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Wall. Rather than focusing on communism, Moulton emphasized themes of memory and historical reinterpretation. The title was inspired by Ciprian Mureșan's 2006 vinyl artwork, which delves into how authoritative narratives can obliterate histories. Anetta Mona Chișa and Lucia Tkáčová crafted 22,000 handmade black balls using Marx's punctuation. Yang Zhenzhong's video showcased 1,500 Siemens employees reciting Deng Xiaoping's speech. Additional works included photo-collages by Luchezar Boyadjiev, a sculpture by Patrick Tottofuoco, and pieces from Sean Snyder, David Levine, and Lucia Nimcova. Moulton compared the exhibition's concept to cognitive exercises for dementia patients.
