FEI Architects Preserves 1988 Educational Technology Building at Peking University

FEI Architects has completed the School of Mathematical Sciences at Peking University's Yanyuan Campus, a project that involved the preservation and adaptive reuse of the Educational Technology Building, originally completed in 1988. The architects first visited the building in 2015 and discovered it was slated for demolition under a new campus plan. Through research, they found it had been one of the most advanced teaching facilities in Yanyuan, housing the largest auditorium on campus and serving as a hub for teaching, academic exchange, and public events. The building witnessed the university's post-Reform and Opening-up development and holds collective memories for generations of faculty and students. It is the only teaching building from the 1960s to 1990s preserved in the core campus area. The project, covering 11,174 square meters, was completed in 2023, with lead architect Michelle Yip and collaborators including the Beijing Institute of Architectural Science. This eight-year effort highlights the importance of preserving architectural heritage within academic institutions, balancing modern needs with historical significance.
