Federico Barocci Exhibition at Palazzo Ducale in Urbino After 110-Year Wait

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Galleria Nazionale delle Marche has realized a promise made over 110 years ago by its founder Lionello Venturi: a major exhibition dedicated to Federico Barocci (Urbino, 1535–1612), the heir to Raphael. Titled "Federico Barocci Urbino. L’emozione della pittura moderna," the show at Palazzo Ducale brings together 76 works from national and international loans, covering Barocci's entire career. Curated by Luigi Gallo and Anna Maria Ambrosini, the exhibition is structured in six chronological sections, highlighting his altarpieces, preparatory drawings, and innovative etching technique. Barocci, known for his "Cristiana Letizia" (Christian Joy), was the highest-paid artist in Italy during his lifetime, more expensive than Caravaggio or the Carracci. His works often feature views of Palazzo Ducale, serving as political emblems for powerful European families. The exhibition includes the "Deposizione" for Perugia Cathedral and two altarpieces for the Church of Valpolicella, reflecting his close ties to Saint Philip Neri. Barocci's use of multiple etching bites (morsure replicate) softened chiaroscuro, an innovation that influenced the Baroque. The show aims to restore the artist's relevance and offer "a smile and a bit of beauty" to contemporary audiences.
