Fed holds rates steady despite three dissents for hike

economy-finance · 2026-07-29

The Federal Reserve decided to keep its main interest rate steady at 3.5%-3.75%, with a vote of 9-3. Three presidents from regional banks—Beth Hammack from Cleveland, Neel Kashkari from Minneapolis, and Lorie Logan from Dallas—disagreed, suggesting a quarter-point hike. Their concerns were reflected in a statement after the meeting, which reiterated sentiments from June about the importance of economic growth and job creation, stating, “The Committee will deliver price stability.” This dissent highlights worries about inflation, which has lingered above the 2% target for over five years, partly due to tariffs from the Trump era and rising energy costs from Middle Eastern conflicts. Fed Governor Christopher Waller backed the majority, even though he recognized inflation challenges. Markets had pegged the chance of a rate increase at one-in-three. Chairman Kevin Warsh noted inflation is “a choice” and stressed the need for price stability.
