FBI Agent Charged With Stealing $1M in Crypto From Suspect's Wallets

Patrick Steven Yaroch, a former supervisory special agent for the FBI with top-secret clearance, has been accused of embezzling nearly $1 million in cryptocurrency from wallets involved in a counterintelligence probe. He was arrested on July 31 after reportedly admitting to the theft. Facing charges of interstate transportation and receipt of stolen property, Yaroch’s court documents, released on August 1, reveal he exploited his access to retrieve recovery seed phrases and siphon funds to his personal accounts over a year. The stolen cryptocurrency, originally valued at over $900,000, rose to about $1 million. The case escalated when Yaroch reached out to a Department of Justice employee via Signal, resulting in a heartfelt confession at FBI headquarters. Investigators found a Trezor hardware wallet, handwritten seed phrases, and a Kraken account containing approximately $188,570. Additionally, prosecutors retrieved ChatGPT conversations where he sought guidance on investing $1 million and planning a move to Portugal or southern Italy, alongside travel arrangements for September 2026. The FBI suspended and later terminated Yaroch prior to his arrest. This incident underscores the increasing significance of cryptocurrency in national security investigations and the rising use of AI-generated dialogues as evidence. Yaroch is currently in federal custody, maintaining his presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
