Fatma Bucak's 84-Photo Series Debuts in Italy at Fondazione Sardi

exhibition · 2026-05-05

During Turin Art Week, Fondazione Sardi per l'Arte presents the first Italian exhibition of Fatma Bucak's project 'Remains of what has not been said,' a series of 84 photographs addressing oppression, censorship, mourning, and political violence. Curator Lisa Parola, collaborating with the foundation, explains this is the foundation's first production. Founded in 2014 by Pinuccia Sardi of the now-closed Galleria Carlina, the foundation awards the Premio Sardi per l'Arte Back to the Future at Artissima. The exhibition is installed in the Biblioteca Graf of the University of Turin's Faculty of Letters and Philosophy, within the Juvarra-designed Rectorate Palace, surrounded by 19th- and 20th-century European books. The show opens with the video 'Scouring the Press,' featuring two Kurdish women and the artist washing newspaper pages until blank. Two weeks before the opening, twenty law and history students underwent training to serve as cultural mediators during the exhibition. The photographs were created by collecting and cataloging major Turkish newspapers daily for 84 days starting February 7, 2016—a date marking the killing of dozens of Kurdish civilians in Cizre, southeastern Turkey. Bucak emphasizes the importance of both the work itself and its presentation context, mirroring newspaper presentation. The project supports mid-career artists needing institutional and international backing.
